Troubleshooting
Formula Health View, common formula errors, frequently asked questions, and how to get help with Formula Trigga.
Formula Trigga includes a Formula Health View that monitors all formulas on your board. It detects issues automatically — missing columns, broken configurations, quota warnings, and more.
Return to the Formula Trigga overview for the full guide.
Formula Health View
Open the Formula Health View from the app's settings to see the current status of every formula. It organizes formulas into sections: Items Formulas, Subitems Formulas, Deleted Columns with Formulas, and Unclaimed entries. Each formula column shows a badge indicating its status — a checkmark for healthy, a number for issues, "Disabled" for deactivated formulas, or "Partial" for incomplete configurations.

Missing column reference
| Severity | Critical (red) |
| What you see | "Referenced column was deleted. Update your formula to use an existing column." |
| How to fix | Open Formula Trigga on the affected column. The editor highlights the missing reference. Replace it with an existing column name and save. |
Deleted target column
| Severity | Critical (red) |
| What you see | The column appears in the "Deleted Columns with Formulas" section with a Remove button. |
| How to fix | Click Remove to clean up the orphaned formula configuration. The column no longer exists on the board — removing is safe. |
Unclaimed automations
| Severity | Warning (orange) |
| What you see | Entries in the "Unclaimed" section with a tooltip: "These were left behind when formula setup was interrupted." |
| How to fix | Click Remove. These are leftover automation triggers from an interrupted save. Removing them has no effect on your active formulas. |
Broken automations
| Severity | Critical (red) |
| What you see | "Formula won't recalculate automatically." |
| How to fix | Open Formula Trigga on the affected column and re-save your formula. This recreates the automation triggers. |
Subscription or quota warning
| Severity | Warning (orange) |
| What you see | An orange banner at the top: "App subscription has expired." or a quota usage warning. |
| How to fix | Upgrade your plan or wait for the next billing cycle. Check current usage in the Settings view. |
Partial configuration
| Severity | Warning (orange) |
| What you see | A "Partial" badge on the column. "Formula was partially saved." |
| How to fix | Open Formula Trigga on this column and re-save your formula. This completes the configuration. |
Disabled formula
| Severity | Info (gray) |
| What you see | A "Disabled" badge on the column. |
| How to fix | Open Formula Trigga on the column and toggle the formula back on. See Writing Formulas for details on enabling and disabling. |
Common Errors
These issues appear during formula editing or at save time, not in the health view.
Formula won't save
A syntax error prevents saving. Common causes:
- Missing closing parenthesis:
IF({Status} == "Done", "Yes"— add the missing) - Unrecognized function name: check spelling against the Function Reference
- Referencing an unsupported column type (mirror, formula, tags): see Supported Columns
The formula editor shows an error message below the input describing the specific problem.
Native formula column can't be referenced
monday.com's built-in formula column is read-only and cannot be used as an input. You'll see a warning at save time: "Formula column (read-only, circular dependency risk)."
Reference the source columns directly instead. If your native formula uses {Numbers A} + {Numbers B}, reference {Numbers A} and {Numbers B} in your Formula Trigga formula.
Result doesn't match expected type
The formula produces a value that doesn't fit the target column. For example, writing text like "hello" to a Numbers column causes an error.
Check the type coercion rules in Writing Formulas. Make sure your formula output matches what the target column expects.
Division by zero
DIVIDE(x, 0) throws an error and the formula fails for that item.
Guard division with an IF check:
IF({Denominator} == 0, 0, DIVIDE({Numerator}, {Denominator}))See Calculate Percentages Safely for the full pattern.
Mirror column not supported
Mirror columns cannot be referenced in formulas. They are read-only reflections of data from connected boards.
Reference the original column on the connected board directly, or copy the mirrored value into a classic column first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What column types can I write formulas to? A: Text, Numbers, Date, Status, People, Long Text, Email, and Dropdown. See Supported Columns for the full list.
Q: Can formulas trigger automations? A: Yes — that's the core feature. Formula Trigga writes to classic columns, which monday.com automations already watch. When the formula updates a column value, any automation on that column fires.
Q: Will Formula Trigga conflict with my existing automations? A: No. It writes to classic columns the same way a manual edit does. Your existing automations continue to work.
Q: What if a formula silently breaks? A: The Formula Health View monitors all formulas on your board and catches issues proactively — missing columns, broken automation triggers, partial configurations. Open it regularly to check status.
Q: What happens if I rename a column? A: Nothing breaks. Formulas are stored using internal column identifiers, not display names. The editor always shows the current column name.
Q: How many functions are available? A: 57 functions across 5 categories: Date and Time, Numeric, Text, Conditional, and Constants. See the Function Reference for the full list.
Q: Does it work with subitems?
A: Yes. Subitem formulas can reference columns from the parent item using {Parent's Column Name} syntax. See Parent Column References.
Q: What's the automation execution quota? A: Each formula calculation triggered by a column change counts as one execution. Quota depends on your plan. Check current usage in the app's Settings view.
Q: Can I calculate formulas for all existing items at once? A: Yes. Use the "Set and calculate all items" option when saving a formula. It processes all board items with progress tracking. See Writing Formulas for details on batch calculation.
Q: What happens if I uninstall the app? A: Formulas stop calculating. Column values that were already written remain in place — no data is deleted.
Q: What value does an empty Status column return?
A: The string "Empty" — not an empty string "". This is the most common gotcha. Use IF({Status} == "Empty", ...) to check for it. See Writing Formulas for details on empty values.
Q: Can I reference one Formula Trigga column in another formula? A: Formula Trigga writes to classic columns, which can be referenced by other formulas. However, monday.com's native formula column type cannot be referenced as a source.
Q: Can I use mirror columns in formulas? A: No. Mirror columns are not supported. Reference the original column from the connected board instead.
Q: What's the maximum formula length? A: 5,000 characters, with up to 100 column references per formula. See Writing Formulas for formula limits.
Q: What happens when a formula returns null or empty? A: The target column is cleared. This is useful for conditionally blanking out values.
Q: Can two formulas target the same column? A: No. Each column can have only one formula attached.
Q: Are calculations real-time? A: Formulas recalculate when a referenced column value changes — it's event-driven, not polling. The update happens within seconds.
Q: Does it work across boards? A: Formulas work within a single board. Subitem formulas can also reference the parent board's columns, but you cannot reference columns from unrelated boards.
Q: What format codes does FORMAT_DATE use?
A: Moment.js tokens: YYYY, MM, DD, MMMM, Do, etc. See Working with Dates for the full table.
Q: Why does my date show a long UTC string in a Text column?
A: Without FORMAT_DATE(), a date value written to a Text column shows the raw UTC representation. Wrap your date expression with FORMAT_DATE() to control the output. See Working with Dates for details.
